How It Works

Tournament Play:

There is only one type of tournament - The BMSA Championship. Rather than a yearly event, the tournament simply starts again as soon as it finishes.

Matches can be played on any full size snooker table in the world - but for a great local recommendation, see the 'Where To Play' page.

Each tournament match you win will gain you points. The further you progress through a tournament, the more points you can win - this is the only way a player can gain points.

Points are awarded as follows...
  • Win a quarter final match (or any previous rounds) = 1 point
  • Win a semi final match = 2 points
  • Win the final = 5 points
  • Win a match by coin toss or successful appeal = No points
(see 'When matches are not played in time' below)
When there are more than 8 players and less than 16 players in a tournament, some players will be awarded 'byes' meaning that automatically progress through to the second round. This will be fair in the long run as all players will get an equal chance to benefit from byes as we go from tournament to tournament.

You will be sent an email to tell you who your next opponent is and how long you have to play (usually 6 weeks per match). If you want to see how the tournament is progressing, just visit this website and click on Tournaments.

Upon becoming The BMSA Champion, the tournament winner receives  the BMSA Championship Trophy where it can take pride of place on their mantelpiece until a new champion emerges.

Match Length & Reporting Scores:

Players must decide, before the match commences, from the following options:

1 frame
Best of 3
Best of 5
Best of 7
Best of 11
Best of 13
Best of 17

However, the final of any tournament must be at least the best of 5.
It is the winners responsibility to report the match score - all matches must end with a winner.

When Matches Are Not Played:

If a match is not played within the time provided, a winner will be selected by a coin toss (by a non-BMSA member). However, if a player feels he/she made good effort to arrange the match and their opponent did not, an appeal should be made by email as soon as the time is up. A time limit will be given to players to appeal - this is usually only 2 days after the deadline.

No points are awarded for winning a match by coin toss or successful appeal. Also, the match will not count as a 'win' for the winner or a 'loss ' for the loser in the rankings table.

Any player that fails to play two of their tournament matches will be out of that tournament immediately unless they successfully appealed to show they made good effort to arrange their match.

Any player that fails to play three matches in a row (even if in different BMSA tournaments) will lose their membership unless they succsessfully appealed to show they made good effort to arrange their matches.

Contacting Players

Click here to request current members' contact details by email. Please do not use their details for spam or pass on their email addresses without their permission.

Rankings Table:

Your position on the rankings table is worked out solely by your performance at your tournament matches. There are no 'friendly' matches, league or ladder matches. You can of course play members or non-members when ever you wish but only your BMSA Tournament matches will count towards your ranking.

Highest Breaks:

As players achieve high breaks, they can be reported at the same time as the match scores on this website. Only high breaks that were achieved during tournament play can be included. There are no extra points awarded for high breaks; they are only recorded on the website for interest.

Points Compression:

The points will be compressed at the end of every tournament. This stops any players from getting so far ahead that they can never be caught up. Even the best players will have to keep in good shape to stay at the top! It also means that the players at the bottom of the rankings table will never get left too far behind.

When the points are compressed, any gaps in points that are greater than 10 between players that are next to each other on the rankings table will be reduced to 10.
